NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE CAMPAIGN

July 31 2015.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) Campaign gives employers a chance to check they’re paying their employees the correct minimum wage, and make sure they pay any money owed to employees.

Employees have a legal right to the NMW and most employers pay at least the minimum, but there are some common mistakes that can mean employees don’t get what they’re entitled to.

If you’re an employer and are not sure whether or not you’re paying the NMW – which is enforceable – you can call the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) helpline on 0300 123 2671.

What to do if you haven’t been paying NMW;
1. Ensure you start paying employees the correct NMW rate for their age group.

2. Pay your employees what you owe them (based on today’s NMW rates).

3. Use the online notification form to tell HMRC about any arrears you need to pay.

4. Use the online disclosure form to tell HMRC once you’ve paid your NMW arrears.

If you tell HMRC about National Minimum Wage arrears right away, you won’t:
1. Have to pay a penalty (100 per cent of what you owe, up to a maximum of £20,000 per employee).

2. Be named publicly on the list of employers not paying NMW.
