ROAD SAFETY TRUST INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR FUNDING

November 30 2015.

The Road Safety Trust (RST) is inviting applications for funding for research and/or practical interventions to enhance road safety.

RST says that successful bids are likely to arise from a wide range of applications that are in accord with its charitable objectives - with education, enforcement or engineering approaches likely to underpin successful applications.

The charity suggests bids “might therefore propose to trial the impacts of new street layouts or features, roads signing, roads policing initiatives or offender education schemes”.

In its guidance, RST says applicants should consider: research and project objectives; road safety benefits to the road user community; project methodology including ethical and privacy issues if relevant; knowledge of the relevant literature or practice and project structure and management, including a clear timetable for the project. Bids should also include a clear breakdown of costs and the proportion of total cost requested from RST.

Suzette Davenport, chair of RST, said: “Good policy must always be informed by research evidence and sound practical interventions.

“The Trust looks forward to playing its part in supporting research projects and in helping organisations to develop practical ways, whether through education, engineering, enforcement or a combination of any or all of these, to reduce death and injury on our roads.

“The Trust will offer funding for projects twice a year. We hope to receive funding bids by January 15 and decide which to support in March 2016. The second call for applications will be made in the summer.

“Recent casualty figures show that there is still more to do to reduce the level of risk on our roads, especially for the more vulnerable road users. We look forward to receiving applications for projects that will tackle this issue.”

Rob Gifford, RST CEO, said: “I am delighted to launch the announcement of grant funding by the Trust. This is new money invested in road safety interventions to save lives on our roads.

“Guided by an independent board of trustees, we now have an opportunity to look at the challenges facing road safety and how best to tackle them. I hope the Trust will act as a major support for the road safety community over the years to come.”

Full details of the grants policy and how to apply can be found online HERE. Grant applications for this phase of funding will close on 15 January 2016.
