KBC Helmets has always been keen on the off-road scene and to that end sponsor Wayne Smith of Pioneer Yamaha in the Maxxis British Motocross Championship. But getting down and dirty took on a whole new meaning recently for the winners of KBC's annual Day in the Dirt Competition.

As part of KBC's dealer incentive programme, the country is split into leagues with dealers able to earn points for certain helmets ordered. At the end of the promotional period, the top two dealers from each league win a place on the KBC Day in the Dirt event at Wheeldon Farm Off Road Bike Centre, near Totnes in Devon.

KBC's Product and Brand Manager Loz Broers, himself a keen off-roader, obviously insists on a hands-on approach and was pleased to find that unusually fine weather greeted the KBC posse, meaning that not only were they able to use the indoor arena, but on the second day also had the added bonus of use of the outdoor track.

With its unique indoor arena, the centre provides enough twists, turns, berms and jumps to test the expert, but also provides the ideal stable format for the novice to develop their skills - exampled by Loz's right hand aide and Sales Office Manager, Connie Wan-Docksey, who had only ridden a bike once before!

As a reward session, it's probably unwise to say Loz was overtaken at one stage by Mark Whitfield of Bikers World, or that Paul Harrison of Dameralles soon re-kindled skills last deployed some 15 years ago, or that Jason Pennellier (a keen road racer) of West London Yamaha finally learned how not to get his knee down, because that misses the point in that this was primarily a fun two days in good company and with excellent food (especially the now legendary 'Hock' - a speciality of The Avon Inn (Avonwick, Totnes, TQ10 9NB, Tel: 01364 73475).

The Wheeldon Farm Off-Road Centre, run by brothers Andrew and Jim Savery, supported by KBC and Suzuki GB and approved by the ACU, opened in 2003. They use Suzuki 450s, 250s and 125s and can cater for anyone from junior to adult, male and female, novice or experienced, indoor or green laning (South Devon has the highest concentration of green lanes in the country). All riding kit (including KBC helmets of course - with two sets of liners - one in the wash one to wear!) is supplied as is high quality accommodation and a heated indoor pool!
