Motorcycle sales in India rose 15.7% to 6,208,000 units in fiscal 2004. Including exports, sales rose 16.8% to the level of 6,575,000 units.
Hero Honda Motors Ltd., the world's largest motorcycle maker, saw total sales including exports surge 26.4% to some 2,621,000 units.
The nation's No. 2 motorcycle maker Bajaj Auto Ltd. enjoyed a similar 24% rise in sales to 1,600,000 units.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. moved beyond its focus on scooters to also begin selling normal motorcycles in fiscal 2004. Strong sales of both scooters and motorcycles helped HMSI witness a 62% jump in overall sales to 552,000 units.
While these top three motorcycle makers enjoyed expanding sales in fiscal 2004, the other local makers like LML Ltd. and Kinetic Motor Co. suffered steep declines.
