HONDA TOPS INDIAN MARKET

Indian motorcycle sales by three major manufacturers, including Honda Motor Co.'s local subsidiary, surged 18.1% in the year to March 2006 as the market apparently surpassed 7 million units for the first time.
India is the world's second-largest motorcycle market after China. Honda's Indian subsidiary, Hero Honda Motors Ltd., saw sales soar 14.5%, topping 3 million for the first time. Elsewhere, sales grew 26.4% to 2.02 million units at second-ranked Bajaj Auto Ltd. and 15% to 1.34 million at TVS Motors Co.
Overall, sales reached more than 6.4 million units from April 2005 through the end of February 2006. The figures for all of fiscal 2005, which are slated for release soon, are expected to confirm that shipments exceeded the 7 million mark.
Suzuki is using its local subsidiary to gradually expand the regions where it will sell new motorcycles equipped with 125cc engines. The firm sold out its initial March production run in 36 locations nationwide and aims to expand distribution in April to some 70 areas. Suzuki is shooting for sales of 100,000 units in the first year.
On the other hand, Honda is targeting sales of 6 million units by 2010. That translates into a 60% share of the market, which is expected to reach 10 million units in 2010.
