Honda has announced that it has developed the world's first production airbag system for motorcycles.
The company plans to make this system available on its new 1,800cc Gold Wing, due out in the U.S. in mid-2006. The system will then be gradually made available on other motorcycles, including those for the Japanese and European markets.
The airbag needs only around 0.06 second to inflate after the crash sensor and the electronic control unit detect a collision.
The system is claimed to largely prevent the rider from being thrown off the bike in frontal collisions at speeds of up to around 50kph, according to Honda. The company believes that it will also reduce fatalities even in high-speed head-on collisions at 90-100kph.
