Yamaha today posted a net loss of Y15.76 billion in the first quarter through March as weak global demand and the yen's strength continue to cut into the motorcycle maker's bottom line.

The January-March net loss is a reversal from the year-earlier profit of Y22.23 billion. The poor results reflect the sharp decline since last fall in demand for mainstay motorcycles and motors for boats in such key markets as the U.S. and Europe.

The company also posted an operating loss of Y15.53 billion for the three months from a year-earlier profit of Y31.11 billion. Revenue dropped 35% to Y266.49 billion from Y412.93 billion.

For the current business year through December, Yamaha Motor continues to expect a Y42 billion net loss and a 22% drop in revenue to Y1.25 trillion.
