The Weston Mercury is reporting that Weston Beachrace organiser Gareth Hockey has said he will not return to organise another event there, following the cancelation of last Sunday's event.

A crash on the start straight resulted in some 17 injuried riders, one serious, and the decision was made not to re-start the race due to the lack of medical cover.

Emotions are still running high as riders and spectators are reported to be demanding refunds of entry and admission fees and the debate continues as to the decision to run the race in the wet and windy conditions. Some are saying the start should have been delayed, while others say that the mass start has always been a disaster waiting to happen. Saturday's quad race also suffered a big crash at the first corner, which resulted in a number of injuries.

Even if Gareth Hockey does not return to organise the Weston Beachrace, the fact that the event is such a big money spinner for both the town and the industry will almost certainly mean that a new organiser will be brought in and changes to the start and management of the race can only be expected.
