July 8 2015.

Clearer call charges have been introduced by Ofcom which means that from 1st July, landline and mobile charges will be easier to calculate for calls to numbers starting 084, 087, 09 and 118, while freephone (0800 and 0808) will become free from mobiles.

Prior to the changes, callers  to these numbers have not generally been told by the service provider how much they will be charged. Under the new regime prices will become clearer on telephone bills, in marketing and in advertising through a programme known as UK Calling.

Charges for service numbers will be made up of an “access charge” going to the phone company, plus a “service charge” set by the company or organisation being called.
