The AJS Modena classically-styled scooter has been a best-selling product for two years now and has seen a year-on-year sales increase of over 50 per cent. Such is the popularity of the machine that end-user customers have shown their allegiance to the marque by forming a Modena Owner's Club via Facebook

However, it appears that the future of the Modena could well be under threat from pretenders to its throne, causing Nick Brown, managing director of AJS Motorcycles to quickly implement evasive action.

“We, along with other reputable distributors of Far Eastern built, low capacity machines, are suffering as a result of cheap imitations being imported into the country and seemingly sold as loss leaders. We feel that such actions are intended to damage the competition in order to gain a monopoly, which ultimately will only serve to destroy the market as a whole.

“As a result, it has been necessary for AJS to react by matching trade and retail prices set elsewhere, which means that, with immediate effect, the suggested selling price of the Modena 50cc is £1079.00 and the 125cc will be £1099.00. Any AJS dealers with un-registered Modena machines in stock will receive a credit for the difference in price.

“We sympathise with our dealers for any disruption this may cause, but we have been left with little choice. There was a time when co-existing importers behaved in a more honourable fashion, however, the aggressive and greedy tactics deployed by a minority are denting that relationship. It is our trade customers who will eventually suffer as inferior products flood the market.

“The Modena is well liked and is a brand leader. We are confident that this price realignment will help AJS retain its share of the market.”
