Historic British firm Métisse Motorcycles stunned thousands of enthusiasts at the recent Motorcycle World Show at Beaulieu, England, home of the National Motor Museum. In a sun kissed arena that had just seen other world champions parade on two and three wheels, Don Rickman roared into view on the first replica Steve McQueen 'Métisse Desert Racer'.

The bike is an exact copy of the machine originally developed by movie legend Steve McQueen for serious competition use. It is authentically hand built by Métisse Motorcycles in England, and is fully endorsed by the McQueen estate and features his signature on each one of the replicas.

Scrambling (motocross) legend Don, who was present with his equally famous brother Derek (a co-founder of Rickman Métisse and manufacturer of the original Desert Racer), could not resist the chance to ride the first bike that will be presented to McQueen's son Chad in the near future. Don told the enthusiastic crowd that this reproduction was 'perfect and authentic in every respect'.

A limited number of 300 are being built to order, complete with an official certificate of authenticity. The Steve McQueen Desert Racer is available now and several orders were taken even before the bike entered the arena. Enthusiasts who clamoured around the stand, situated amongst many famous racing bikes were told, 'It is the only way to experience a bike developed by a great rider as well as a movie legend, and coming from the same stable
as the original!'

When it first appeared in 1966, McQueen described his Métisse bike as being years ahead of its time, revolutionary and the best handling rig he'd ever owned. During the intervening years, the name Métisse has become symbolic with the golden age of British motorcycling. Renowned for their frame kits and rolling chassis, the Steve McQueen Métisse offers a complete bike, ready to ride, utilising a fully reconditioned Triumph TR6 engine with single carburettor.

McQueen was an accomplished rider and keen mechanic, working alongside his friend Bud
Ekins, who performed the legendary stunt in The Great Escape. The replica Métisse has been faithfully built encompassing the ideals employed by McQueen and Ekins, with customised footrests, Ceriani style forks and BSA yokes.
