For many youngsters the first ride on the back of a motorcycle is the beginning of a lifetime of adventures on two wheels. Providing that the child can sit astride the motorcycle with both feet on the footrests, and they are wearing an approved safety helmet, children of any age are permitted to ride pillion.

Pillion passengers are, however, vulnerable to back injury and road safety campaigns, including 'THINK!' by the Department for Transport, recommend wearing back protectors. British protection specialists Planet-Knox have introduced a version of their innovative Kompakt roll-up back protector designed specifically for children. Knox believe that introducing children to the concept at a young age will encourage a positive attitude to safety equipment as they grow up.

Measuring 37cm x 23cm (15" x 9") the Kompakt Kids is designed for children from 140cm (4'6") tall, which will be suitable for average height youngsters aged 10 and over. Research suggests that is the age at which children tend to start riding pillion. At less than 250 grams, the Kompakt Kids delivers a significant amount of protection in a highly portable package and the design team at Knox carefully styled the Kompakt so that it would sit comfortably beneath armoured motorcycle clothing while still covering all of the vulnerable areas of the back required under rigorous European safety standards. Its naturally strong hexagonal honeycomb interior absorbs massive amounts of energy from an impact, in a similar way to the crumple zone on a car, and it exceeds the current CE standard for back-protectors (1621-2, Level 1).

Comfort is enhanced with a spacer fabric backing for breathability and an adjustable Velcro waistband with Increased Posture Support (IPS) for a close fit.

The new Knox Kompakt Kids Back Protector sells for £39.99. A free sizing chart may be downloaded from the Knox website.
