DEFERRING SELF-ASSESSMENT PAYMENTS ON ACCOUNT

June 17th, 2020.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) advises that anyone due to make a self-assessment payment on account in July 2020, has the option to defer payment until January 2021.

There isn’t an application process. Those in financial difficulty as a result of COVID-19 who chose to defer, simply don’t need to pay the amount due in July. If HMRC doesn’t receive the payment then it will automatically treat it as a deferral. Interest will not be charged, nor will penalties be applied, provided the self-assessment payment is made by the 31st of January 2021 either as one payment, or in instalments.

More about the deferral, as well as information on paying in instalments or making a full payment is available in HMRC’s new guidance on Self-Assessment deferral on GOV.UK.
